ORTHO-BIONOMY with Jo
For Women’s Health and Wellbeing
Ortho-Bionomy is a gentle, effective bodywork therapy that employs subtle, yet deliberate movements that re-position your body to naturally release stress and pain patterns. This non-invasive system of healing reminds the body of its natural ability to release and self-correct, restore balance, access comfortable movement patterns and reduce pain.
To move well and balance properly, your nerves convey important messages to your joints and muscles. During injury, stress or illness these messages can be disrupted, sometimes causing pain and dysfunction. Ortho-Bionomy can help shift postural issues that are the cause of many bio-mechanical problems.
Both chronic and acute conditions such as lower back pain, neck and shoulders, knees and other joint issues can all be addressed from a skeletal and soft tissue perspective. In Ortho-Bionomy we observe and work with the whole person, structure, posture, movement, expression and functionality. Many clients report release of physical and emotional stress with Ortho-Bionomy.
Therefore, if you are experiencing pain and want to avoid painful manipulations and forceful pressures, then you may like to consider Ortho-Bionomy. This natural drug free approach is known to help improve flexibility, release joint stiffness, increase the range of movement, improve circulation and generally ease stress to relax your body.
Ortho-Bionomy Sessions
Throughout the Ortho-Bionomy session you will remain fully clothed and be asked to sit or lie on a massage table. The Ortho-Bionomy Practitioner will ask specific questions and use gentle touch to assess your health concerns. The Ortho-Bionomy Practitioner will use gentle release techniques that involve comfortable positioning, brief compression or traction and subtle contact.
This gentle approach avoids forceful manipulations and deep pressure. For comfortable postures stimulate the self-corrective reflexes and break the cycle of pain, thereby re-educating your body to return to its correct muscular and structural position.
During the session it is beneficial to tell your Ortho-Bionomy Practitioner what you are feeling. This feedback will help them fine tune the session to your body’s individual needs. Self-care techniques may be given for home practice between sessions to facilitate the self-healing process.
A gentle, pain free modality that focuses on you and your unique needs
The Foundations of Ortho-Bionomy
Ortho-Bionomy is a complementary therapy that has deep roots in Osteopathy. The practice of Osteopathy was founded in 1874, by an American Physician (MD) and Civil War surgeon Dr Andrew Taylor Still. According to the Osteopathic philosophy- when the body’s musculoskeletal system is not properly aligned, it inhibits circulation, lymphatic or nervous system function and therefore reduces the body’s ability to self-correct and heal.
The founder of Ortho-Bionomy, Dr Arthur Lincoln Pauls was a British trained Osteopath (DO) from Canada and developed the practice of Ortho-Bionomy in the mid 1970s. Although Ortho-Bionomy and Osteopathy have similarities, particularly with the Positional Release Techniques developed by Lawrence Jones DO, Arthur’s refinement of these techniques led him to discover the value of interacting with the Pro-prioceptive Nervous System.
That is where we can have the body stimulate its own healing self-corrective reflexes, so the structure has a better understanding and therefore is better able to re-educate itself. With Ortho-Bionomy the Practitioner works with the structure- not on it!
”Ortho-Bionomy is really about understanding your whole life cycle. Naturally, we focus on the structures because that is the literal skeleton upon which our life is built. When your structure works right, your circulation works better, you feel better and you think better”
— Dr A. L. Pauls
