POSTNATAL RECOVERY

Ortho-Bionomy for Mothers

The early days, weeks and months of motherhood are precious and exciting. Never is there a more important time for you as a new mother to nurture and look after yourself, both physically and emotionally. With the joy of motherhood comes possibly the busiest time of life. Making time to restore and maintain ongoing dynamic pelvic stability may not register on the mother’s list of priorities. However, early post childbirth is an important time to protect, heal and re-strengthen the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles and re-align the structural components of the pelvis and spine.

As a new mum, it is natural to want to get your body back into shape, but it is essential to take your time by not doing too much too soon. Every new mother’s experience is different, as your comfort levels, energy and need to rest will vary. The mother’s body has undergone a sudden major change from having muscles tightly stretched over an expanded uterus, to a softer abdomen with weaker muscular control with structural shifts of the pelvis and spine.

Postnatal Recovery will help you to understand and become more aware of your body’s individual needs, as you recover from pregnancy, childbirth and adapt to the lifestyle as a new mother. Early post childbirth is a crucial time to promote dynamic stability, so that all the pelvic and trunk muscles work in a synergistic or balanced pattern.

This unique Postnatal Recovery program is specifically designed with Jo’s extensive experience as a Women’s Health Nurse, Pregnancy & Postnatal Yoga teacher, HypnoBirthing Practitioner and Associate Practitioner of Ortho-Bionomy. For the best results it is purposefully held over 3 sessions that focus on gradually promoting natural re-alignment, releasing muscular and emotional tension and regaining inner strength. Otherwise, mum can attend on a casual basis.

Ortho-Bionomy is a gentle, non-invasive body therapy that reminds the body of its natural ability to restore balance, access comfortable movement patterns, enhance relaxation and reduce pain. Ortho-Bionomy is collaborative with Medical and Allied Health Professionals, and mums recovering from abdominal muscle separation, perineal tears, stress incontinence and prolapse will also benefit from this Postnatal Recovery program.

Jo acknowledges that the practice of Ortho-Bionomy is a complementary therapy, and is not a substitute for treatment or recommendations by a medical doctor. If you have specific questions about any medical matter, you are advised to consult with your doctor or health care provider.

  • Mothers can also decide to attend alone during the first 6 months and beyond into their years of caring for their toddler and young children.

  • Continuing the Ortho-Bionomy sessions beyond these formative years of Motherhood- leading well into their Grandmother years.

  • Releasing hand and wrist pain

Pain in the wrists, hands, thumbs or fingers can occur due to over-use. It is thought to occur more in new mothers due to the repetitive nature of mothercrafting when lifting, carrying and supporting baby.

  • Regaining pelvic stability

Early post childbirth is a crucial time for mum to regain pelvic stability in a gentle and gradual way. This approach is effective in rehabilitating faulty patterns of movement caused by pelvic weakness associated with back and pelvic girdle pain.

  • Releasing upper body tension and pain

New mums are particularly at risk of neck, shoulder and upper back pain due to leaning forwards over their baby so often. Lifting and carrying other children can also take its toll.

  • Promoting relaxation and wellbeing

It is no surprise that new mums feel tired for looking after your new baby can be all consuming. Especially when you are establishing feeding routines and juggle sleep with the needs of your baby and the rest of your family. Now is the time to nurture and look after yourself with relaxation, as it can become a rejuvenating and refreshing break.
