Investigating a hospital based HypnoBirthing program on birth outcomes by MONASH University
This study was undertaken at a level 3 metropolitan public hospital between 31st January 2017 and 1st February 2018. The intervention was the introduction of the antenatal education program HypnoBirthing, which consists of five, two and a half hour education sessions including the physiology and hormones of labour, introduction and practice of self-hypnosis techniques, fear release activities and education regarding common obstetric interventions.
Conclusion: This study demonstrated reduced analgesia use, higher likelihood of a vaginal birth, and less incidence of elective caesarean sections, without additional risk of perineal trauma, bleeding or need to transfer neonates to higher levels of care for women using HypnoBirthing. HypnoBirthing may slow or even reduce the increasing rate of obstetric interventions within the current birthing population. This approach may aid women to make informed decisions, empowering them in their birthing choices and allow her support team to advocate for her wishes.
